Analysis of a Successful Hubber: Nelle Hoxie

By Kidgas

In keeping with a theme I started with my analysis of Ryan Kett, I want to look at another successful hubber and discover what we can learn. I want to figure out if there are additional characteristics that make Nelle Hoxie successful earning over $1000 per month on HubPages. First of all, Nelle takes a different approach in her Hubs. She writes product review Hubs and makes the majority of her money through being an Amazon affiliate.

Nelle Is an Amazon Queen

Nelle is Another Hard Worker

It goes without saying that in order to be successful at anything, hard work is required.  Unfortunately, so many people either forget this aspect or simply ignore it hoping for an easy way to make money only to be disappointed and frustrated.  Nelle is not one of those people.  In the past 17 months on HubPages, she has published 359 Hubs.  That is an average of over 21 per month!  As any Hubber that has written a lot of Hubs knows, there are several hours that can be invested in each and every Hub.

Also researching products, formulating reviews and linking to those products requires not only time but a special skill that must be developed and honed.  Nelle has acquired this ability through extensive efforts and has refined her delivery to encourage individuals to shop and purchase through her affiliate link.

Nelle is Not Afraid of Failure

I know this since she has freely admitted that she often doesn't know which products may sell well or which may be duds.  Not every Hub will be a big money maker.  To succeed online, you have to be willing to put in quite a bit of effort on many Hubs that won't get traffic, won't get ad revenue, or won't make a sale.  In other words, you have to be willing to make mistakes and be willing to fail.  It is impossible to write the perfect Hub.  There is always something different that you feel you could do.  But in reality the worst thing you could do is not publish anything while trying to write that perfect article.  Paralysis by analysis is the antithesis of making money online.

Nelle is Willing to Experiment and Learn

This characteristic goes along with the second one.  If you are afraid to fail, you won't be willing to experiment and learn.  Nelle has tried many different things in her time on HubPages and as a result has developed a winning combination and strategy.  She is also working on developing her skills writing for AdSense which is a totally different method of writing requiring different skills than writing for Amazon.  And yet, she is willing to take a chance, experiment and fail while getting it right.

Summing It All Up

To summarize those characteristics which have made Nelle Hoxie a successful Hubber who is able to make over $1000 per month on HubPages:

  1. Nelle is an incredibly hard worker who has published many product Hubs with the intent of selling through Amazon.
  2. She has developed a well-tuned technique of writing that is effective for selling products through trial and error because
  3. she is willing to fail and take a chance, learning from her mistakes and constantly striving to improve her results.

Because of the above characteristics, I have no doubt that she will learn how to write to make money online through AdSense and diversify her income stream as she intends.

Here's to Nelle Hoxie, a successful Hubber!

Another great review, Kidgas.

Nelle is my hero!

FYI: She has quite a bit more than 359 hubs; she's freely discussed the fact that she does have other profiles here.

@anujagarwal,

Yes, I forgot that. Thought about it this morning while driving in to work. It is corrected now.

@Lily,

That is true. Unfortunately, I do not know what those profiles are to make an accurate count. Just demonstrates that she really works that much harder.

Nelle is great - can you do girly_girl09 next? Her hubs are great.

Many of us do have several profiles here - my other me has loads more hubs than this me. One annoying thing with HubPages is that other hubbers have a habit of stealing and muscling into your niches! It's a natural thing to do, because finding lucrative niches is the hardest thing to do here. Having multiple personas makes it more difficult to find out what we're all up to.

Kidgas profile image

Kidgas Hub Author 21 months ago

@brettb,

You are right that girlygirl is great as well. I will stick her in the queue so that she is number 5 in the order. I have 2 others that I want to get to first.

I am sure that it is wise to have other accounts. It is also wise to have your own sites as well as accounts at other writing sites as well. It pays to diversify in any area.

I believe that Nelle also shows little regard to 'keyword tools' when deciding which niches to crack. Instead, she keeps an eye out in Magazines and supermarkets for emerging or popular products, and write to those markets instead. Certainly food for thought, Nelle is a fantastic marketer.

Also, I should just point out, Nelle writes away from her main account. She has certainly produced way more than 21 hubs per month ;)

Kidgas profile image

Kidgas Hub Author 20 months ago

True, Ryan. Nelle does have more than one account so the work that she does is greater than I am able to directly determine.

I have heard that magazines and seeing what people are purchasing in malls is a great way to get leads on what is selling. There is likely little reason to pay attention to keywords when marketing products anyway. Obviously, your research would have to be different.

I love this statement and am going to print it out and stick it on my monitor:

"Paralysis by analysis is the antithesis of making money online."

This is a great hub, and along with the others you've written, is terrific inspiration for those who may be sputtering along...like me... :)

Thanks!

Thanks so much, TamCor. Often I write things to remind myself about what I should be doing. I find myself sputtering along from time to time and simply need a swift kick in the pants.

I am honored that you plan to print out that statement. I wish you the best in your online endeavors. Please keep us all updated.

Great hub and very cool subject matter. I'm trying to adopt more of that attitude of not being afraid to fail and write hubs that end up going nowhere. It's the only way to be efficient.

Great hub. The importance of diligence can't be overstated, and it's not a value that's praised as much as it used to be.

Kidgas Hub Author 19 months ago

@dawnM,

I have had little success as well, but I am not a salesperson. HubPages is a great place to write since there are many ways to make some extra money.

@Benjimester,

You have to be unafraid of failure or you won't try anything in life. You never know what will happen until you try.

@goodmovies,

Thanks. You are right that diligence is being neglected in today's society.

Another nice Hub. The thing about failing with a hub is that it costs very little, nothing in money, and you do learn what doesn't work - which is also worth knowing. Thanks again for this informative little series of articles.

Les, you are right about failing. Great comment.
