Building a Blogging Empire

By Kidgas

Now that I have started to make money with a blog, I am finding that I am making plans to gradually grow a blogging empire by using a portion of the revenue from my online activities to fund the costs associated with growing an increasing web presence. It has always been my intention to build something using only my time as the main input. Any money that I needed for expenses was to come from previous earnings on the internet.

That is one reason why HubPages became the foundation for the first two years. The site is free to join and it was possible to build up some earnings relatively quickly with the multiple affiliate programs and some hard work. Now I didn't earn as much as I could have because I didn't work as hard as others at driving traffic and writing. I also knew very little about SEO and what it took to produce popular content.

However, I do think that I am getting better writing content and am starting to benefit from the amount of time that my articles have been online. I have also noticed that a slight increase in effort produces much greater results now than it would have one year ago. The effects of my work are starting to be multiplied so that I can begin to make plans for building a blogging empire.

HubPages as a Foundation

It may sound crazy, but I plan on using HubPages as the foundation for building up a portfolio of money making blogs. That is because I intend to work hard to add Hubs to my account which will ultimately earn enough each month to provide the necessary income to pay authors for developing content for self-hosted WordPress blogs.

Right now, I have 2 blogs. I write 3 days per week for my main blog, Cash Flow Mantra, which takes up a fair amount of time. I have hired 2 authors to produce four total articles per month for a second blog called Grand Per Month. Right now, CFM is making money but I wonder how consistent it will be. As we all know, any algorithm update or action by Google could easily cripple a website.

In order to diversify my income streams, I am using the revenue from CFM to help build up GPM. I am estimating costs at $100 per month and don't plan on GPM making much money until after 4 months. However, once that occurs it might be possible to start another blog. The problem is that there is no way I could write full-time for CFM, part-time for GPM, and part-time for a third blog. I would have to hire writers for all the content on a third blog.

That is where HubPages comes in. I already have over 200 Hubs which are indexed and have been around for some time. They are earning me money now and with a little additional effort, I bet that I could get to the point of receiving $100 per month from HubPages. That would cover all of the costs for GPM such that any money earned by those blogs could go toward the $250-300 per month it would cost to get another site off the ground with the necessary content.

Looking at Some Numbers

Let's assume that I can make $100 per month with HubPages by the end of this year. And let's assume that the costs to have new content on a blog are $250 per month, but that after 6 months, the blog is making $500 per month on average. That means that each additional blog would add $250 in monthly profits to a portfolio of blogs. Now I am not even assuming any growth in the blog from that point on.

If I could accomplish this level of profit with my second blog by July, I could start that third blog and then start a new one every six months. Within 2 years, I could easily be making $1000 per month profit after expenses without doing much additional work at all. That figure could double to $2000 per month in the next 2 years with another 4 blogs.

Imagine having 8 different sites all earning money each and every month with minimal effort other than uploading content provided by staff writers. The income streams could be diverse and be based upon different niches. I am just starting to imagine the possibilities and brainstorming different ideas for other sites. In the meantime, I plan on trying to publish as much as I can to get to the point where HubPages can support the growth and development of these other sites.

I enjoy hearing how others think who are in the same line of work I am in.

I have 7 blogs, and am finding that I am spreading myself too thin :/ I started them before I was quite as busy, now I'm finding that it leaves me little time to add new content to each...

Maybe I can outsource the article writing soon...

Wow! Seven blogs! That would spread me way too thin. Two is tough enough which is why I will need to outsource content if I want to start a third so the first two plus HubPages will need to provide me with enough income to get it done.

Yeah, as it is, I am only able to add new content to each blog 2 - 3 times a month. I know that more often would be better :) My best blog is just beginning to make sales now, and is getting over 5,000 uniques a month.

Hi, Kidgas! I don't think you have to worry about Google and the Panda deal as long as you are writing, or providing, rich, informative content on your Hubs and blogs. Google hates to be made to look stupid, I understand, and if a searcher ends up at a page full of junk, Google will not be happy. So if you provide great content, Google will love you and will send you lots of traffic and you will profit mightily...So I've heard!

@uakoko,

Thanks for the encouraging words. I still worry about any entity or individual who holds a lot of power.

@healthwealthmusic,

Congrats on getting some sales.
