Can a Part-Time Blogger Make $1000 per Month?
By Kidgas
We often read about bloggers making lots of money online. Four and five figures monthly is not unheard of. But that shouldn't be that big a surprise if that is essentially a career for these writers. I am sure that we would all be making more money if we had 12 hours per day to sit and write and network on the internet. For me, it all began with a simple question: Can a part-time blogger like me earn $1000 per month? Thus began my quest!
Analyzing Trends
When I started my first WordPress blog, I thought that the way to make money was going to be more of the same that is offered here at HubPages, namely AdSense and Amazon. That was OK because at least the Ad Program here was covering the cost of hosting. But the trend became fairly obvious. I was not going to make a significant amount of money quickly enough to make a real impact in my life. It was going to take years and thousands of articles on many blogs to make any real money. I am not a salesperson so don't like internet marketing per se.
As I began to interact with the personal finance blogging community, I began to notice something. Some of these individuals were putting up pretty impressive and consistent earnings reports. They were making $500, $1000, $1500 per month. No big deal if that is a full-time gig, but they had also been talking about jobs. Wait a minute? Are these bloggers doing this on the side? Is it really possible to make $1000 per month as a part-time blogger?
November 2011
Well, I discovered that the answer was "YES"! It is possible to make $1000 per month as a part-time blogger. I know because I did this in November 2011 only 6 full months since starting my own self-hosted WordPress blog. I really didn't think it was possible, but I can tell you that it is. Although it doesn't look like I will crack that barrier this month (looking like about $500 or $600), I am still making more in this month than in six months with my other writing.
As a result of this revelation, I decided to start another blog with a couple of these personal finance bloggers. It is called Grand Per Month and will seek to offer tips, advice, encouragement, and ideas for making $1000 per month with a part-time gig whether online or offline.
I think that $1000 per month is pretty decent money for part-time work that could be used for paying off debt (which is what I am doing with it), starting an emergency fund, paying for a car or place to live, or simply enhancing one's lifestyle.
So be sure to join us at Grand Per Month where each week beginning January 2nd a new idea for making $1000 with a part-time gig will be presented. You may or may not be able to make money with each idea, but I am sure that something will be useful to you. It should get your creative juices flowing and provide you with plenty of options for making a grand per month.

I'm going to follow your lead. I'll let you know what happens...
@Info Bucket,
For me, HP will never be a huge money maker at all. I use the money that I get from the Ad Program to cover my hosting costs on my own blog. That is where I have made the most with less than half the articles.
@Craig,
Be sure to keep us updated. I will be looking forward to it.
cool
Very encouraging article but I did expect more details on how you made that money as a blogger. Maybe I missed something, GClark
@harry2c,
Thanks.
@GClark,
The details will be forthcoming on the new site so be sure to visit and read the Jan 2nd post.
Congratulations! I'm about to start my own blog. I hope I can be as successful. The only thing that hinders me going full throttle is my 9-5 job.
@lorenmurcia,
You just have to commit a little time each day and start networking early. That way you build traffic which will motivate you since you won't earn money right away.
I just signed up with justbeenpaid but this sounds interesting
I may just give it a go, thank you for the info. Like lorenmurcia, the paying job does tend to get in the way.
Great hub with very interesting information. I'll be loosing my job come January 16th 2012 so I'm interested in anything that could earn me a few more quid!
Many thanks for sharing.
Good hub, however so far much earning did not really work out for me on blogging.
Maybe I have to focus on one niche and specialize in that.... another goal for 2012...
@Seeker7: sorry to hear about your news! I am out of a job since October 2009 - our company has closed down as so many here in Ireland. Wishing you all the best and good luck earning money with your articles / on the jobfront :)
@tobusiness,
There are many ways to make money on the internet. Blogging and hosting my own blog is what has worked for me so far. This may last or may not. Being able to adapt is important.
@seeker7,
Sorry to hear about your job. It sounds like you could benefit from ideas on making extra money.
@Slightly Bonkers,
Picking a niche is important. An online diary won't make much money nor will certain niches.
I've got that new blog's debut on my calendar. I'm looking forward to it. It sounds like you'll have lots and lots of ideas. None of them will work for everyone, but everyone ought to find something that will give their blogs a boost.
Plus, if you aren't into blogging, other ways to make extra money. We will be looking for you.
Great article-will check this out for sure since I want writing to be a career. Very nice. Thanks!
@agreenworld,
It is certainly possible. There are lots of blog owners looking for writers so you can earn some immediate income plus do some more work on your own to build up residual income at the same time.
Great advice. I actually put together a business prospectus for myself with outlined immediate and realistic long term goals. I set up a website with blog.
Amazon just published my first ebook and with hp, I am on the right path for decent exposure. So often people can become trapped into someone else's scam etc because they are so eager to write and have their work out there. But it's nice to see you offer something legit for those of us that really find writing not only a passion but something they can monetize.
Congratulations on that first ebook. It is something that I would want to do someday. I would probably do non-fiction but I suppose you never know. Good luck with exposure.
I will definitely follow your progress. I am also interested to make a decent side income from writing, and would be interested to read your findings. Good luck!
I can tell you that it is possible. I have done it again this month as well. I will be using the money to pay off debt.
Oh, Kidgas, that is so wonderful and kind of helping us. I could do with that to pay off my debts. I certainly will following you. Gosh, that would be so great. Thank you.
Just be sure to follow my new blog for ideas, etc.
Will definitely be following this new blog. I have a few blogs myself but to be honest I do not give them much attention at all. This will all change once I get the expert advice from your new blog. Thanks for a very interesting hub.
If you have a decent blog that is specific toward a particular topic, there could be some advertisers that might have an interest. They could be a good source of profits.
This interesting. I'll definitively check out your blog.
Thanks, I think it will be worth your time.
