Dress the Colts in Tutus and Keep 'Em Home Next Week

If the Indianapolis Colt’s owners and management is so afraid of their star players getting hurt, they shouldn’t even risk a flight to Buffalo next Sunday.  Keep everybody at home and wrap them in bubble pack or something.  Just forfeit the game.  They essentially did that today against the Jets anyway.

Of course, people will always make the argument that it would be tragic to see Peyton or Reggie or Dallas get hurt just prior to the playoffs.  And they would be right.  It would have also been tragic at 6-0, 9-0, or 12-0 as well.  Any play on any down can result in a season or career ending injury.

What if the Colts starters lose their edge and come out flat in the first playoff game?  They already have a bye that first week.  Then there will be tons of second guessing regarding the decision to just hand the Jets a win on a silver platter.  I should assume that the starters will only play half the game next week, too.  Again I ask, why not just forfeit?

Perfect Season?

History Not in the Making

It might be one thing if this was the first time that the Colts and Peyton were enjoying this much success, but it isn’t.  They already have a Super Bowl win.  The last pinnacle in the NFL is to make history!  Run the table and get that perfect season!  Ten years from now, no one except Colts fans and NFL stats geeks will remember that they started 14-0 or how they performed in the playoffs.  But I guarantee that every football fan will be discussing the 1972 Miami Dolphins one hundred years from now.  There will be over 140 Super Bowl winners but only one perfect season.

It’s a shame that management is focused on short term results rather than the long term historical implications.  I think every Colts fan at the Jets game deserves a full refund of their ticket price since the Colts gave less than 100%.  I didn’t even need Peyton in my fantasy league today.  I just think it is terrible to roll over and die the way they did on the field today.  That’s why I suggest just not even showing up to play next week.  Stay home and get ready for the playoffs if that is what you want.

That was a pathetic performance today! I remember when the Patriots were trying for their perfect season - I don't think having Brady sit out the game would have been an option. Or could you imagine Bret Favre tanking on an opportunity for a perfect season. It was totally bizarre for me to watch. 1972 teams did play differently I guess and deserve to hold the record.

Needless to say, Nelle, I agree 100%. I was thinking about Bret Favre and Brady and thinking the exact same thing. I like your word "pathetic". Seems to sum it up.

It was worse than pathetic;it was a ripoff!The coach definately should've sent the new playas out on the field early in the season instead of benching Manning and a few others in last night's game.I don't know what their Super bowl chances are now,but I'ma just saying;I don't care if they win or lose,but if they don't make the Bowl,the Colt's coach may wind up with a bunch of disappointed fans.I'll be among them.

People who bought tickets for that "game" should get a refund, They did not get what they paid for. Nobody pays good money to see second or third stringers play. The fans were cheated out of there money.

I watched the last part of that game on my feet pacing, stunned that Caldwell could be making such a terrible decision.

I wasn't the only one, 'sounds' like he's lost the fans... and from the look on many of the players yesterday, he's lost some of his players as well.

@pjp,

If they don't win the Super Bowl, then the whole season was a waste. Even that may not take the foul taste out of many people's mouths.

@Bill Y.,

Good luck on that refund, but I agree.

@gd,

Jeff Saturday is a competitor. He wanted to win that game. Peyton should have stood up for the team and the possibility of history. Hiding behind the "coaches orders" excuse was lame.

Where does the money come from to pay these guys salaries? Gee, I think the fans should have something to say about a chance at history. The Colts management have turned their backs on the fans and the great players that have worked so hard to achieve the success that they have had up until this debauchery. I'll never buy another ticket to a colts game.

@Bobster,

Exactly. I have yet to hear anything positive about this whole fiasco. I will follow them into the playoffs and will be like a weight around their necks.

Imagine all the merchandise and marketing lost by giving up a perfect season. They could have upped the season ticket prices by 25% and people would be clammering to get in. Not anymore. So short-sighted.

Wow! I'm still in disbelief. That game reeked of a payoff. Whatever the amount was, I hope it was worth it. Those players are warriors - they went to the game to win -not play. Maybe the management should pull the coach out on the next game so he won't get his feelings injured. Take a bribe for the perfect season? For real?

Just think of it this way. They just have to win all the games in the playoffs and not worry about this stupid undefeated season mantra anyway. The monkey is off of their back and lets see if they can carry whatever momentum they had into the playoffs and win the whole thing.

@jobister,

Well what are you gonna do next week? They almost have to win to have any momentum and confidence going into the playoffs. Losing 2 in a row is no way to start a playoff run at the Super Bowl. I think momentum has swung against the Colts, and it may come back to haunt them.

As a Chargers fan I feel ripped off too. I was hoping the Colts would be 17-0 by the time we played them in the AFC Title game. If we win, then David Slays Goliath. If we don't win, then at least we know we lost to one of the greatest teams in history.

If the Colts even win the Super Bowl, they will be one of 44 teams. But had they made the perfect season, they would have been immortalized in history as the greatest team ever.

The question of "What if?" will linger forever.

@Dave,

Great sentiments, especially David and Goliath. I always like to see LT do well. He is a class act.

This may have been a playoff strategic plan also. By INTENTIONALLY losing, they kept Pittsburgh out of the playoffs. Peyton & Co. would much rather play the Jets or Ravens compared to the Steelers. Fppd for thought.

That is true. The Steelers would likely have been been more competitive than the Jets. The Ravens are usually pretty tough at the end of the season, though.
