Increased AdSense Income Through Increased Effort

73

By Kidgas

Earlier this year, I was starting to get a little discouraged with my AdSense earnings.  They just seemed to keep declining and declining after what seemed like a decent a reasonable fall last year considering I just started writing online the last week of May 2009.  I wasn't really sure what was happening but I can tell you that it was quite discouraging.  But instead of giving up, I decided to focus on the issue at hand and try to figure out what the problem might be.  I suspected that there might be some seasonal variation since I hadn't been through a spring before.  But I also suspected that there might be more to it.

Lack of Productivity

A little look at what the problem was revealed that it could be directly related to a lack of productivity on my part. Look at the table below where I list my Hubs published by month and compare them to my AdSense income for that month. I think that you may notice the same thing that I noticed.  It was in April that I noticed that my income was declining and I wasn't going to let that happen any longer.  I had to do something about it since doing nothing is just not an option in my book.  Even though I didn't start out to make a ton of money using HubPages, the challenge to constantly improve is what motivates me and now I am addicted to the challenge.

Daily Publishing of Hubs

About July of this year, I noticed that Ryan Kett kept showing up in my inbox as having published a new Hub. Each and every day and sometimes multiple times in the same day. What?! That has to a mistake. But no, it wasn't. He just kept publishing and publishing. I wondered how it was working and ran across his Hub reporting his AdSense income and results.

Then I knew the answer to my problem. I wasn't publishing enough. I had stopped the intensity that I had possessed during the early days when I was writing 20-24 Hubs per month. I even published an analysis of Ryan since I felt that the information was so important and felt that daily publishing was a key to his success.

Effort is Paying Off

Well, I made a commitment that I would work harder to publish as much as possible even if I couldn't publish daily.  With a full-time job and 6 kids, it is difficult to find time with all the other responsibilities that I have going.  But I did decide that I would start to place more focus and emphasis on publishing as well as creating backlinks during times when I wasn't publishing.

It seems like the effort is paying off.  Even though I don't think I will ever publish more than 20 or so Hubs in a month, I think the increasing pace during September has really been beneficial.  September 2010 has been my best AdSense month so far.

Going Forward

For the last 3 months of the year, I plan on publishing enough Hubs to get me to 200.  I don't know why I like round numbers, but I do.  I think that this is a decent goal and one that can be achieved without having to kill myself to get it done.  I also think that by publishing another 34 Hubs in 3 months at a minimum will still allow me to keep up some moderate level of intensity that will be reflected in my AdSense earnings.

In addition to the increase in AdSense income, I am also seeing a gradual increase in traffic and hope that it can continue as well.  I suspect that it will especially if I can improve some of my backlinking efforts.  My goal would be to see my traffic increase by about 30% by the end of the year as well as publishing the additional Hubs.  I have many Hubs that have absolutely no backlinks at all.  I think even putting up one or two on them can have an enormous impact and is something that I need to do with increased focus and diligence.

So if you want to increase your AdSense earnings, rather than bemoan the situation that you are in, get to work publishing or backlinking.  I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the results just like I was.  You will also be motivated to continue working hard and seeing more positive results.

So far, I consider myself still new to this online writing, so I am not sure what works and what doesn't work, so I am trying everything I read about on HubPages. Some ideas seem to work better than others. I would like to publish more Hubs a week, but do not have the time right now to do more.

Enjoyed your Hub and your stats....some good inspiration to work on some more Hubs!

Thanks. The time factor is certainly tough. I got up at 4:45 am to write this one before working a 12 hour day. Now I am beat and don't feel like doing much.

I think you are more focused on publishing more hubs, but have you thought of seeing more side about promotion since i think if you want to earn money, promotion is more important because there are already millions of hubs out there and most of them are not getting any organic traffic. I think publishing 10 quality hubs in a month is enough and use of the rest of time in promotion. I decided to do so.

Kidgas profile image

Kidgas Hub Author 20 months ago

I think you are right. Promotion is definitely an important part of earning more income. I do try to create backlinks when I can, although I must confess I don't spend as much time as I ought to on promotion. I agree that 10 quality Hubs may very well be a good number.

There is definitely a correlation to continued publishing and growth of income, not just Adsense but all vendors, however, while Ryan has found one solution, it is not the only one.

Publishing one hub a day certainly doesn't hurt though. :)

Lakeerie,

So true. I am trying to find a balance since writing and publishing requires so much more effort that it can difficult for me to find the time. On those days when I am busy, I really am trying to find the time to post a few backlinks and work on traffic.

Thanks for posting your earnings record. I’ve recently started writing at HubPages and am a full-time teacher, so like you I am very busy. My hubs will probably be created slowly. Although I know everyone’s earnings will be different, it was interesting to see how the number of your hubs related to the money that you earned. This was very useful information!

But we need to figure out where Misha is backlinking from, or what the deal is-you already know he's not published many hubs at all. I've not been here a year, but there are a few of mine that I think should be through the roof(LOL!), and they get good traffic. . . .but not nearly enough.

I am getting some traffic from digg, reddit, and tumblr. My facebook traffic is high. . .but according to google analytics, my facebook reader basically suck!hahah

other than hubpages and google, I'm getting the most out of myspace.

If I learn any tricks, I share them-I think it benefits all of hubpages.com if we all start getting huge traffic.

Kidgas profile image

Kidgas Hub Author 19 months ago

Misha has published a Hub on his backlinking strategy so I would recommend checking that out. I also would like to improve traffic. I am doing so gradually and seem to have been helped by doing more publishing.

Good sound practical advice. My personal intention is to create hubs that people enjoy and learn from, especially on the topics of health and family fun, but earning money through Adsense would be a wonderful bonus and knowledge on how to do that is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for sharing and welcoming me on the Forum section.(Guess I'm proof that your theory about gaining traffic from being productive and maintaining a visible presence works.)

Good advice Kidgas. I too have began to slow with my publishing since finishing the 30 in 30. It seems I just cant think of good subjects to write on to produce a good quality hub. I do realize that consistent writing produces consistent earnings and have seen an increase thus far. I am reading some more of your articles to help stir up some thoughts lol Thanks for helping me with the motivation type hub. Woodsmens

Just looked at this hub again, and personally I think that a big part of getting traffic is focused tight hub topics, and using good keywords. Traffic is important but targeted traffic is more important.

Kidgas profile image

Kidgas Hub Author 19 months ago

lakeerieartists,

You bring up a very good point about targeted traffic. Obviously it is best if you can get those who are looking to perform some sort of action.

lakeerieartists profile image

lakeerieartists 19 months ago

I think that what I have found works best is when you are writing on really tight narrow topic, because it weeds out the people who are not interested. So while my traffic in general may be low, the people who get there are already wanting to learn about what I am writing.

Kidgas profile image

Kidgas Hub Author 19 months ago

That is certainly a very sound strategy.

I know this sounds stupid, but what in the heck is a backlink anyhow?

I don't know if I have them or not, and what they can do to increase income.

help!

Kidgas profile image

Kidgas Hub Author 19 months ago

A backlink is simply a clickable link to your content or website. You can create them yourself or others may like your content and link to your stuff for you. They increase income by increasing traffic and improving your position in the search engine results.

Kidgas,

Thanks for the useful hub.

With a full time job and 6 kids, you are maintaining hub score of 100. Great job! It takes lot of effort.

I know it's a silly question. How much time do you spend to write each hub on an average?

Thanks,

Sekhar

Squirrelchaser profile image

Squirrelchaser 19 months ago

This is all hard work, but I'm hooked! Like you,I want to succeed at it. I have 17 hubs now and no traffic. I haven't figured out the backlink yet. Will look it up next. I have tried to link to other things with no success. Thanks for the info. Needed that.

Kidgas profile image

Kidgas Hub Author 19 months ago

@Sekharg,

The least amount of time that it takes to write a Hub is about 30 minutes. On the other hand, I have spent as much as about 4-5 hours doing research for other Hubs. The average is about 45-60 minutes overall. But it does get quicker over time with experience.

@Squirrelchaser,

You will get it. It does take time. When I started, I thought there was no way I could write 100 Hubs but now I have 160. I still am working on traffic but it keeps growing month after month. Just keep at it and you will be pleasantly pleased.

Kidgas profile image

Kidgas Hub Author 19 months ago

Some of my earlier Hubs aren't all that great. It did take me a while to understand keywords and backlinks. Ultimately my goal would be to get to $1 per Hub per month. I will eventually get there I am sure, but it seems like I am just starting to see some results. Currently, it seems like amount of traffic is the main issue.

Kidgas profile image

Kidgas Hub Author 19 months ago

I am hoping that they take off like yours. I hadn't heard about the first paragraph. I will have to try that from time to time.

Glad you like my recent Hubs. I do think they are getting better. Thanks for the luck. Enjoy your weekend as well.

Well, November was a fairly solid month in regards to AdSense income. My number of clicks were down compared to October but the CPC was higher which made it a decent month overall.

Kidgas profile image

Kidgas Hub Author 16 months ago

I updated following January 2011. It was the most Hubs I had published in a while and was a record traffic month for me. I suspect that maintaining this level of effort will only lead to increasing rewards.
